Caffeine May Help or Hinder Performance
By Deanna Irving-Swain
Fitness Pro., CourtHouse Athletic Club
Question: I work-out 4-5 times a week, and am generally healthy. I like to drink coffee in the mornings.
Is there anything wrong with that? Pat, Hallsville.
Answer: There is nothing detrimental to having a few cups of coffee. I would like to expound upon my answer to this question by quoting my fitness mentor, Tom Seabourne. “Caffeine in small doses has been shown to enhance performance in elite and recreational athletes. One theory is that caffeine spares glycogen in muscle and uses free fatty acids for energy. In addition, caffeine may improve sodium, potassium and calcium balance within the working muscles.” How your body reacts to caffeine, depends on how sensitive your system is. We use caffeine so often that we don’t think of it as a supplement, but it is strong medicine. Caffeine acts as a stimulant to the central nervous system. It increases heart rate and metabolic rate and causes releases of epinephrine, which may enhance utilization of fat as an energy source. Caffeine may cause “nervousness” in individuals with a sensitive system or taken on an empty stomach. Caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea and cola provide an immediate lift that increases energy and stamina. According to Earl Mindell’s supplement bible, caffeine may also increase sex drive. Possible benefits of caffeine include improved alertness and enhanced performance by improving endurance and perception. Caffeine does, however, have some possible adverse effects. It may cause inability to sleep, heartburn, irregular heartbeat and diarrhea. If you indulge in caffeine, don’t overdo it. Enjoy good things in moderation. Be sure to steer clear of caffeine pills and tablets, these products may produce adverse effects in some people.

Team Zoe’s Joey Maalouf Chats Hair And Beauty With Savvy Texas Magazine
When Joey Maalouf's not busy being go-to stylist and BFF to Rachel Zoe, he’s in high demand to help get celebs red carpet ready and has first-hand knowledge of the latest beauty buzz. So I was thrilled to sit down with him and pick his brain on a bevy of hair and beauty topics, including Rachel Zoe’s infamous, signature waves. Here’s our beauty-packed Q&A:
STM: Joey, your job is a dream job! How did you first get into hair and makeup?
JM: I grew up in a household of hair and makeup. It ran in my family. My dad’s youngest brother was a hair stylist and my mom’s sister owned a barbershop. And my three older brothers are all in the industry. My first childhood memory is of my brothers dressing my younger sister up and playing photo shoot (laughs)!
STM: And you immediately knew then it was your calling?
JM: I just think it [his profession] chose me. I remember the first time I did someone’s makeup. I was fifteen years old and I was like ‘oh, this is it!’ It was the beginning of my career.
STM: So what's a typical "day in the life" of Joey Maalouf? I envision non-stop glamour and cutting-edge beauty and fashion. Details, please!
JM: It’s normal to me so it’s funny that you say that (he laughs), but definitely my whole life revolves around hair and makeup and clothes, celebrated people and red carpet events. It’s fun and feels totally natural.
STM: Sort of like an off-duty doctor constantly gets asked for medical advice, do you get hit up all the time for hair and makeup expertise?
JM: For sure (laughs)!
STM: Ok, I’m going to try to restrain myself from asking what you think about my hair!
JM: It’s like, people say to me ‘I just got my haircut…what do you think of it’ and then I’m like ‘ummm, let me go get my scissors.’ And then I’m hacking away at their hair.
STM: Regardless of age, what's the biggest makeup mistake women make?
JM: When they look at a photograph they love, they don’t take it as an inspiration, they take it literal. So if you want a crazy cat-eye, like the Burberry ad, which is on a ten-year-old model, that look can actually look amazing on you, you just have to tweak it to make it work for your face, your hair color, and eye color. You definitely have to wear makeup with confidence and I think a person should wear nothing if they don’t know what they’re doing versus going over-board and doing too much. Edit everything down! So, wear four pounds of mascara but nothing else and you’ll look amazing.
STM: Any other makeup or hair don’ts we gals need to stop committing?
JM: I don’t really like don’ts because I think anything can look good on anyone; it’s just a matter of tweaking it to make it work for you. But the major don’ts are:
Never have bad skin
Never have chapped lips
I’m obsessed with healthy skin!
STM: Let's talk hair! What are your favorite hair trends right now?
JM: I love a really tight, slicked-back ponytail. It’s humidity-proof and I think there’s something really glamorous and effortless about it because if you throw on a red lip with it you could put a gown on and look dressed up. And if you wear a leather jacket and some cut-off shorts, you could still look amazing going to the grocery store. So, think about wearing a slicked-back pony to work with your normal work clothes. And then when you get home and only have 10 minutes to get ready, what do you do? You put your dressier clothes on, you tease the ponytail and then you wrap it around and stick three pins in it and then you have an updo. The work's all done!
STM: Okay, seriously...what's the real secret to Rachel Zoe's gorgeous waves? Can us mere mortals get those waves?
JM: Anyone can have them! Any hair texture. If you have straight hair, sleep with your hair wet in pig-tailed braids, so when you wake up you have a perfect wave. And then just break it up with a curling iron by taking sections of hair and wrapping it around the iron. (And you only need to take three or four pieces on each side as well as the front pieces). When you have naturally wavy hair, I always love to keep the top straight (whether you want to blow dry that part straight or when you’re sleeping use a scarf to wrap the top part), keeping the middle wavy. Then take a flatiron to the ends of it.
STM: Favorite hair product every gal should have/try?
JM: Sea Salt spray is amazing for wavy hair. What I love about it is I love wavy hair to be matte and straight hair to be extremely shiny. So, I think Sea Salt spray is amazing for body and holding the shape of a wave. I would say that my all-time favorite hair product is L’Oreal Paris Elnett Hairspray. The more you spray, the more hold you get, the less you spray, the more movement you get. You can do so much with it. It’s the only product I think I can’t live without.
STM: All right, what hair product would you recommend for Texans trying to combat crazy humidity?
JM: I definitely think that you should use a heat-protectant shine spray and put it on when your hair’s wet. Because then when you’re blow-drying your hair, it seals it in, as opposed to putting it on last…then it doesn’t really soak in. When you’re blow drying and your hair is damp, that dampness is moving the product around when you’re brushing it and it really seals it in.
STM: Any new makeup products you're totally loving?
JM: Ummm, yes! If you ever came to my apartment, it’s like a makeup store! My new latest obsession is a metallic colored liquid eyeliner! I think it’s so subtle. Make Up For Ever makes the most amazing liners and they’re waterproof, so they don’t move. And just do a little line along the lash line. It could even be a bright turquoise. It looks fresh and modern without being overboard.
STM: What’s your top beauty must?
JM: Face oil is really important and most people don’t know about it. I use it everyday. Face oil actually moisturizes the skin. Rodin makes a good face oil.
STM: Okay, face oil! Even for people who worry about acne?
JM: 100%! I think people get acne because their skin is actually dry and they are trying to get rid of the acne by drying it even more and in reality you need to be putting more moisture into your skin. You can use face oil in conjunction with your daily moisturizer or even alternate between the two. Face oil moisturizes your skin and your daily moisturizer actually locks in the moisture that you already have in your skin.
STM: Any other beauty tips?
JM: DON’T over-tweeze your eyebrows!
STM: Besides Rachel's blog what are some of your fave beauty and fashion blogs?
JM: The Zoe Report is definitely my favorite and now we have the Zoe Beautiful and Accesszoeries sections! I also love StyleCaster. I’m a contributing writer for them. They’re really a fun fashion blog.
STM: What makeup and hair trends can we expect to see this spring?
JM: I love pastel eye shadows right now and a pastel cheek, in a light lavender or baby-pink tone. Especially when you have paler skin. For hair, there’s a lot of slicked-back hair, whether it’s in a ponytail or down. Straight hair is making its way back in too. So we’re seeing less of a messy wave.
STM: What new projects can we expect from you? Any books or hair product lines on the horizon?
JM: Oh my gosh, I’m totally going to do everything! All of the above. And the way my life works, they’ll probably all launch at the same time!

Splitsville: Break Up With Your Split Ends For Good
Nothing turns a good hair day into a bad one faster than irksome split ends. Those annoying little divided hairs can make your mane look frizzy and fried (not a good combo unless you’re an Angora rabbit). So if you’re over frayed ends, give ‘em the boot by using a mending serum! You: If hair is already split, how do these split-end products work? Me: Polymers. Negative and positively charged polymers stick to hair “fusing” the split ends together! While mending serum can’t permanently fuse the ends back together, your frayed ends will stay bonded for up to three days. You: Awesome! Me: Indeed!
Ready to break up with your split ends, lickity split, hair enthusiasts?
Then try these fusion-fixin’ remedies:
TRESemme Split Remedy Split End Sealing Serum $4.99
After just three uses, this serum boasts the elimination of up to 80% split ends while sealing in major shine. This revolutionary remedy will leave you with a perfectly smooth finish all day long (sans the split ends and frizz).
Nexxus ProMend Split End Binding Crème $10.99
This fusion-tastic crème can bind up to 92% of split ends back together after just one use! Simply apply a generous dollop to your locks (be sure to coat them evenly) after each wash and then style as usual. This magical binder is a major miracle worker when it comes to delivering super smooth, shiny tresses. I can personally attest to its worthy factor as this is one of my go-to products I wouldn’t dream of skipping.
Dear split ends: I’ve decided to break up with you. It’s not you, it’s me. I want my locks to be free of frayed-ends once and for all. Good riddance!

Crows Feet Cupcakes & Cellulite
When it comes to skin, that old saying “it’s all about the location” rings true as non-stop travel has left my skin dryer than the Mojave dessert lately. And I’m not talking about a little dryness that can be cured with a bit of lotion, but the kind of dry skin that resembles that of a crocodile’s. (Not a good look unless I’m trying to match my croc-embossed clutch.) So if you belong to the dry-skin club and want to make certain your exterior is silky smooth and ready for all those adorable ensembles you just purchased for spring, here are three skin-quenching moisturizers that will leave you touchably soft from head-to-toe:
For ultra dry skin: Eucerin Professional Repair Extremely Dry Skin Lotion ($7.49)
Beauty 411: This new moisture-packed lotion will kick dry skin to the curb in no time, as its concentrated formula is designed to deliver a one-two punch by first alleviating dry skin and then repairing it (to prevent future dryness). This innovative moisturizer will leave your skin smoo-ooth. (That’s two-syllable smooth!)
Why you’ll love it: Not only is Eucerin a dermatologist recommended brand, but it’s fragrance free and won’t clog pores (important to those of us who don’t want a side of perfume with their lotion or pore-clogging ingredients). This light-weight lotion delivers some serious moisturize due to its Ceramide-3 component (which helps lock your skin lock in moisture).
For Cocoa Butter fans: Burt’s Bees Richly Replenishing Cocoa Butter Body Lotion ($10)
Beauty 411: This all-natural, dermatologist-tested body lotion is a yummy blend of Cocoa and Cupuacu Butters (Cupuacu is a super fruit found in South America) and botanical moisturizers like Sunflower Oil. Which means this lotion will leave your skin feeling ultra moisturized, oh-so-soft, and smelling good enough to eat!
Why you’ll love it: Burt’s Bees testers reported moisturized skin for up to 24 hours (now that’s my kind of commitment). Plus the texture is just the right amount of thickness and absorbs quickly, so all you’re left with is soft skin that smells like mixture of cocoa and vanilla. (Yum!)
There you have it, moisture enthusiasts. Worthy lotion picks that will have you exclaiming, ‘so long leathery skin…hello touchably soft me.’ Now the only leather-like accessory you’ll be donning is that new Stella McCartney handbag you just purchased, moisturized mavens!
Meet Your New Favorite Hand Cream: L’Essence De Boshea
Unless you’re a brick layer, dry, rough hands and gnarly cuticles are a big beauty no-no. Which is why we gals are constantly slathering our hands with lotion and partaking in bizarre beauty rituals (mine include sleeping in a tubesocks-Vaseline-over-the-hands concoction -- which my husband never forgets to remind me is semi creepy). So I’m always on the lookout for an
uber-rich, moisturizing, cuticle-taming hand cream for my paws. My latest discovery? L’Esence De Boshea Hand Cream. This oh-so-luxurious hand cream left my mitts super soft, sans the greasy factor (because there’s nothing worse than oily finger prints all over your cell phone screen all day long). Here’s the beauty scoop, hand cream enthusiasts:

Q. When did you realize how strong of a passion you had for art?
A. I realized I had a strong passion for art when I just couldn’t stop dancing or expressing myself in such an organic form at 5 years of age and still dancing. Then I began drawing and doing chalk around the age of 10 when I got my first easel!
My dad has been in the construction business for over 30 years and I grew up around million dollar custom homes. I was mesmerized by it all. Saying one day I would surround myself with beautiful and morbid art that holds such mystery strength. (With out light art there could not be dark and with out dark there could not be light)
When I realized I couldn’t make the money I wanted yet by painting in College, I decided to go to California in 2000 at 21 years of age and become a certified Makeup and Hair Artist at Westmore Academy of Arts. My hands, mind, and soul never looked back. ART IS MY HEART! I believe in the ART of dance, painting, poetry, music, theater, mixed media, new media, various mediums, and LIFE!
Organic Creativity & A Passion For Art
A Q & A With Brandy Adams of WAAS Gallery
Q. What artist would you say really inspires you?
A. Maranda Pleasant –Artist, Yogi, Humanitarian, and Creator of Origin Magazine which is one source for Conscious Culture.
Maranda has shown me so many amazing things, but most importantly how to infect people with positive love and light.
Great quote “Vulerable is still the new strong”
I (Brandy Michele Adams) am at a new stage in my life. It is about service to others while teaching awareness regarding the power of art and how it can change lives, minds, thoughts, and ideas.
Q. Do you feel that Dallas has become one of the main art focused cities in the country?
A. Do I feel? How about I know? When I left California I tattooed on my wrist “There Is No Place Like Home.” Intuitively I know Dallas is becoming One of the Main Art Focused Cities in the Country. That is why I am here, to make that movement happen. Dallas is full amazing opportunity and growth when it comes to the Arts. We have several sub hubs in Dallas that let us flourish with the Arts whether it be interior or exterior! Great architecture, landscaping, publications, and much more needed in the arts but we are at a great start.
Q. How long have you been involved in art world?
A. I am living art so I believe since birth. For those that want to be technical I would say more around the time my hair and makeup career started on my first short film in 2000 called Script Fellows Directed by Sanford Bookstaver. I had to build the treatments with the makeup and hair art in mind. Then got into story boarding which made my heart beat because it was so neat. I have been working with Celebrities and Production Companies over 14 years and the Art of Production is one of my true gifts. LA Fashion Week Mercedes Benz is another avenue where I got to see MY Art thrive. From top couture designers and being the Key Makeup Artist on more then 10 Fashion shows from 2001-2005. Then I became Christian Dior’s National Makeup Artist in 2005 which brought me back home.
Felt some what defeated in the H&M market here that I said to myself what can you do that you love and make a business out of? Then my second child was born “WAAS” (I am a single mom to a 5 year old and thought I wanted another child, which I do, but realized for now it is the gallery)
Now when it comes to selling art I am fresh out the box. I started Renovating WAAS Gallery in 2010 then opened our doors September 2011. We are celebrating our 1 year anniversary September 22, 2012. We are moving into our second year and already making multiple sells, building collectors, and trying to take the interior decorators by storm.
Q. Other than the WAAS gallery, what are some of your favorite some spots in Dallas experience great art?
A. I love the DMA always something to get the mind moving. Dragon Street is great walk to. Now I love hanging around down Flora St with the Opera and Performance Center because then I can visualize where I believe we need more art or other art event opportunities.
Q. What local artists do you feel are making a strong impact with their work right now?
A. Shane Pennington pioneer and visionary. Joshua King cross pollinating all kinds of mediums and intention with his work. Jonathan Ramirez is from Monterrey, Mexico but lives here now and is really pushing the boundries of Digital Media and sculpture. Michael McPhetters graffiti artist taking a stand against trafficking and has a non profit that I work with called Handle with Care Project. There are so many fantastic artist here locally and hard to name just a few, but those are who stick out right now.

Beauty 411: L’Essence De Boshea’s packaging is similar to that of L’Occitane’s with a silver metal tube and chic label. Each tube packs 20% pure, high-quality Shea Butter, which they combine with honey and rosemary extracts to create a nourishing, ultra-moisturizing hand cream that leaves your hands super smooth.
Why you’ll love it: The affordable price is a big reason to love this hand cream. A 5.2 oz tube only costs $16.99 (and a little goes a long way). A super luxe hand cream that rivals L’Occitane for half the cost? You had us at $16.99. Another reason to love L’Essence De Boshea? Their hand cream is 100% cruelty-free and the packaging is made of 100% recyclable products. (Don’t beauty products that make the planet a better place make your heart go pitter patter? Ours too!)
Beauty bottom line: Dry hands don’t stand a chance against this oh-so-luxe cream so we say skip the tubesocks-Vaseline ritual and give L’Essence De Boshea a go. Your paws will thank you.
You can buy L’Essence De Boshea Hand Cream via their website. A bonus? They’re currently offering 20% off + free shipping. And if that’s not cool enough, they also donate $1 to breast cancer research for every tube purchased. (Now just how awesome is that?) Be sure to enter pinkrbn during checkout.
Chronic hand-washers and hand-cream junkies rejoice! Now your mitts can stay smooth and moisturized around the clock (sans the greasy factor or tubesocks/Vaseline contraption).

Boscia’s Super-Cool De-Puffing Eye Balm has landed on my “beauty radar” screen and I’ve eagerly added it to my try-it-soon list – which, these days, is a rather long list. (So many products…so little time.) But hey, a girl can never have too many balms, can she? (Answer: No. No, she can’t.) So, skincare mavens, here’s a beauty snapshot of this “super-cool” eye balm:
The beauty 411: A cooling and soothing balm that instantly de-puffs and revives tired eyes.
How it works: This seven-peptide complex helps diminish puffiness, dark circles, and fine lines. Its formula of licorice root extract nourishes and protects the eye area (along with a blend of botanical oils) and provides a light, sheer hydration.
Why you’ll love it: Give your eyes an instant pick-me-up (read: you can give dark circles, fine lines, and puffy eyes the kiss off).
Think of it as pampering your peepers. You can find this smart ‘lil balm at your local Sephora.
Happy pampering…
So what do you think, skincare enthusiasts? Will this “cool” eye balm find its way to your beauty radar screen? Any other new products you’re lusting over? Share ‘em in the comments section!

I consider my whole life to be a passion for art since it saved my life. My new passion for Art is that I can help myself while helping others.
